- You get to run 10km with World record-breaking athletes as part of a very small team (no more than ten registered runners per 10km segment).
- You get to carry the torch for peace – which has travelled over 3,500 miles in the hands of champions, starting in Kenya in 2015.
- You get a support pack with tips and advice to help you with your training and fundraising (to take part you have to raise at least £100 in sponsorship).
- You get the official Kenya Peace Torch Relay 2016 T-Shirt and medal as mementoes of your participation.
- Most importantly … through the peace school which you help the Aegis Trust to fund in northern Kenya, you get to help save lives by preventing young people from being sucked into the tide of ethnic violence.
To take part, you need to pay a £25 registration fee and raise at least £100 in sponsorship by the date of your participation.
The registration fee, and all funds raised for the Aegis Trust, are non-transferable and non-refundable. If for any reason you become unable to participate, please email [email protected] at the earliest opportunity. You will then be under no obligation to raise any further sponsorship.
You must be aged 18 or over on the date of your participation in the event.
You need to be physically fit and healthy enough to run 10km in 70 minutes or less.
If you have an impairment which may affect your ability to complete the relay segment safely, or if you are under treatment for any condition, then you must consult and obtain the approval of your doctor before taking part.
You will need to complete our Medical Declaration Form (see your support pack following registration) and bring this with you on the day, so that in the event of emergency we can advise medical personnel of any pre-existing conditions or medication you may be taking.
The Kenya Peace Torch Relay 2016 is not a race. However, you will need to complete your segment of the relay in 70 minutes or less (approximately 11 minutes per mile) in order to keep the entire relay on schedule. Please note that if you fall below this minimum pace, you may need to be left behind by the rest of the group.
Your will be responsible for your own transport to the start point and from the finish point. If coming to the relay by car, please ensure that the car is parked safely, legally and in good time to allow you to walk to the start point to be there no later than ten minutes before you are due to set off.
Headphones, earphones or earplugs of any kind are not allowed. Any jewellery which you choose to wear must not present a health hazard to yourself or others during participation in this event.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are dressed appropriately for the event, including the use of high visibility clothing and equipment as needed. If running at night, or at times and in areas affected by heavy traffic, poor weather or low light conditions, then you will be expected to wear suitable high visibility clothing. Your visibility to other road users is an extremely important factor in reducing your risk of being involved in a collision of any kind.
We would strongly encourage you to do so. You will be provided on the day with a contact phone number to reach event organisers in the event of a problem. If there is a serious emergency, you should contact the emergency services first and only then contact event organisers when safe.
This is an unsupported event, taking place without marshals or route signage on public streets, footpaths and open roads. You will, however, be met by organisers at the start and the end of your relay segment, and you will be provided with a map and directions.
This will be your full and exclusive responsibility. Be aware that accidents may occur during this event which could result in serious injury or death. These include, but are not limited to, trips, falls, burns, or being struck by motor vehicles. You participate entirely at your own risk.
To help minimize the risks and improve collective safety, you will be expected to maintain good communication with fellow participants throughout the event. You will be expected to not only help ensure your own safety, but also the safety of your fellow runners, and the safety of other road users, by paying full attention at all times to your surroundings and to potential hazards. Such hazards include those related to static elements of the environment (such as potholes or roadworks), those related to other road users, and those related to weather conditions.
Insurance is at your discretion. If you wish to be covered by medical or health insurance for participation in the event, it is your responsibility to arrange appropriate cover. Such cover can quickly and easily be obtained online.
Although you will be invited to carry the torch while running, you are not under any obligation to do so. You should carry the torch only if confident that you can do so safely. Professional athletes carried it over 3,000 miles without injury in 2015 – sometimes lit, sometimes unlit – but there is inevitably some inherent risk involved.
Bottled water will be provided at the start and at the finish of your relay segment, but it may not be possible to have a water station along the route. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are sufficiently hydrated throughout the event, so we recommend that you take a bottle of water with you on the relay.
There is no litter collection following the relay, so please do not drop water bottles, or any other litter, during your participation in this event.
It may be. All participants agree to grant the Aegis Trust the non-exclusive right to use recorded, filmed or photographic material in which they feature during the event.
World record-breaking athletes Rob Young (‘Marathon Man UK’) and Adam Holland have confirmed their intention to participate in the relay and complete all thousand kilometres. However, the Aegis Trust cannot provide an absolute guarantee of their participation, since it is possible that circumstances beyond our control could cause one or both athletes to withdraw.
The precise start times, start points, end points and routes of the relay segments are subject to alteration by the organisers, up to Friday 7 October 2016. If necessitated for reasons of safety, changes to any or all of these aspects may be made up to and including the day of the event itself. As a participant, we will keep you fully informed of any changes planned for the segment on which you are registered.
The Aegis Trust reserves the right to cancel part or all of the event if circumstances beyond its control could put participants at high risk. Such circumstances could include, but are not limited to, extreme weather events or acts of terrorism.
